The frizzy mullet became too much for me to handle, so this past Thursday, we all got our hairs cut. And August did fantastic! He sat perfectly still in the seat with his little cape on and just watched solemnly as his frizz fell to the floor.

Similar to my friend, Anne, our big plans for attending Halloween activities were cut short when August started running a fever again. He ran a really high one Friday night, but it sort of leveled out Saturday. As soon as we got ready to go, he was starting to get hotter. So we ended up just doing some local trick-or-treating. Truthfully, it was just about the most enjoyable Halloween we've had in a few years. Low-key and old-school.

As is always the case with their parties, much fun was had by all. They are fantastic party hosts (and hostesses). Melissa outdid herself with 3 different types of soup: a delicious chili, a chicken noodle soup and a creamy potato. I confess, I had a helping of each. I was not about to let her culinary efforts go unrewarded! She also made some peanut butter pies and pumpkin bars. The girl knows how to feed her guests...
And they had such hilarious creative games where we all took turns making fools of ourselves - but isn't that why you have friends? So you can be silly together when it's called for? From lurching around their garage trying to catch a dangling rice crispy ball in your mouth...

Every now and then I scroll through pictures I've taken on our camera and realize that I completely forgot to blog about something for which I had specifically taken pictures! In this case, it was a loaf of bread I made - from my Domestic Goddess cookbook.
Ingredients
1.5 cups rye flour
2 cups white bread flour
1 pkg (1/4 ounce) of rapid-rise yeast
1 tbsp dark brown sugar
2 tsp salt
1 1/3 cup warm water
3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Instructions
Put the flours, yeast, sugar and salt in a large bowl and slowly add the water, mixing with hands or wooden spoon until you have a messy, but vaguely cohesive lump of dough.
Use more of the melted butter to grease a bowl and plop the dough ball into it so that the top gets buttery (and won't dry out). Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a cold place overnight or in a warm place for about an hour.
When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down, give a few good kneads and form it into a round loaf. Put the loaf onto a baking sheet, cover with a tea towel and let it get puffy for about 30 minutes, during which you should preheat the oven to 375. Bake the loaf for 45-55 minutes, or until the loaf is cooked through. It should sound hollow when you rap on the underside with your knuckles.
