Math at Large

Homeschooling 3:33 PM
Our math program today had us doing "real" graphs. Or, as August says, Grafts.  The kids had the best time grabbing shoes from my closet and hauling them downstairs. They sorted them, fought over my turquoise croc slip-on, then "graphed" them.  Turns out I have more slip-on shoes than lace up shoes or velcro shoes. Does that say something about me?  ...Read More

Worth the Read

9:18 PM
Yet another late night over here. By my choice. As I've said before, my "me" moments usually take place late at night, although I was able to get in a run by myself tonight that was much needed. I even borrowed a friends' Blue Heeler "Hobbes" who is so well trained that he runs off-lead beside you and keeps perfect pace with you. ...Read More

7:00 AM
There is apparently something fascinating about our washing machine. It's like the Pied Piper of Goshen.  The siren call goes out and my children respond... Here, Brooklyn, you go first. Let me help you. My turn. Goodbye Daddy. This is one small step for mankind, one giant step for Dorien. Heave-ho! Just...about...got...it.... Hey! Where'd everybody go??!! ...Read More

Don't Go There

Life 2:39 PM
Thanks to the crazy photo program Macs now come with, you can see what your children look like as aliens. Or depressed/hyper cartoon figures. Or lunatic, megamind game show hosts! This one, I just belly laugh every time I see it! Would I lie to you? It's just hurtful, really. Don't even do this to yourself if your self-esteem is flagging. Baby and...Read More

Then or Now?

11:36 AM
Do you ever ask yourself what it would be like if you lived, say, 200 years ago, as opposed to right now? Or not even that far back. Say 150 years ago.  I admit this is not something I give much thought to. But I did happen to ponder it a second ago. And here's why. I just happened to spend an extremely...Read More

This is My Life

Life 2:17 PM
I've been feeling a little overwhelmed by my life for a few months now. For several reasons. Unrealistic expectations I put on myself. "To do" lists that multiply upon themselves as soon as I tackle one item (not unlike the spell cast on the contents of Beatrix LeStrange's vault in Harry Potter). I feel like I've been waging an internal war, battling my intense...Read More

Late Nights

Life 10:57 PM
After spending most of my day checking things off my "to do" list, I find myself lingering at my laptop in the wee, quiet hours as the rest of my household sleeps around me. Today was a busy Tuesday. Rene went back to Hendrix, we're back in the swing of home-schooling, I'm still trying to tackle my house cleaning, and I cooked Indian...Read More

Christmas Day

1:36 PM
Since my last post was not of happy tidings, I am filling this one with pictures of happy cheer and  good times. Namely, Christmas Day at our house. I realize it's a tad late, but why should that stop me?  Brooklyn and August(Brooklyn wanted to hook their arms, but August was protesting that they NOT do the married pose) Brooklyn - age 5 -...Read More
