Newness

3:18 PM

I don't know about you, but I tend to dread the weeks following New Years Day. Perhaps this is because the next thing to look forward to is a Super Bowl game, followed by Valentines and then the year stretches into an endless summer and for me, the doldrums. Perhaps it's just because the build-up and anticipation surrounding Christmas comes crashing down almost immediately after the big day. I so love Christmas and hate when it's over and passed.

But this year is slightly different. I do have something to look forward to. In about 8-9 weeks, I'll have a new baby! So between now and then I have to get ready! And have I done so? Not really. I've been prolonging the feeling we captured around here during our holiday break...that of utter and complete relaxation.

Ok, I did break down and clean my house from top to bottom on Monday, and I'm trying to get back in the swing of paying bills, managing the daily life of a household and all that, but I'm determined to relish this winter. I forgot that the wonderful chill of a cold day doesn't stop after Christmas, it's (hopefully) just getting going! So as I walk outside and breathe in deep gulps of crisp air, my cheer returns! As I ask my kids what they want for dinner and they unanimously chime, "SOUP!", the cheer meter goes higher! And as I sit here watching the sun sink below a tangle of tree skeletons, painting the sky pinks, blues and lavenders, my cup overflows.

But beyond those sweet things, I've continued to give in to the urge to create. And lately, that creation has taken the form of knitting. Surprise, surprise... So, to share:

A gift for my Grandma Barbara...

This is the second pair I've knitted and I'm starting to whip through them!

Maybe I ought to make some for myself instead of just giving them away! They're awfully comfy.

The inspiration....

My finished project (completed in about 3 hours).

How I love this sweet kid. He thinks the hat is awesome and wears it all the time. You should see the static in his hair when it finally comes off. Wow. And there are currently more projects in the works...I'll keep you posted.

Meanwhile, don't get the winter doldrums! Take every opportunity to cuddle up under warm blankets and watch the West Wing (my other hobby), drink hot cocoa, make soups, enjoy the stark simplicity of a winter tree line, the blazing colors of a sunset, the crispness of the air and its breathability, those last few weeks of pregnancy (oh, that may be just me), and the fresh start of a new year.

Happy New Year!

  1. Love the slippers and the hat! I hear ya on trying to relish the rest of Winter. I have 11 more days until Spring semester starts for me and things, once again get very hectic. The girls and I have spent a lot of time in our pjs watching movies or making crafts, reading books and just wrestling in the floor with Charlie.

Thank you for email a while back, by the way. Sorry I never wrote back. I've been deeply pondering much that you said, though and I think I've been trying to formulate a response...but nothing seems to fit. Needless to say, you're an encouragement to me always, and your email was a huge encouragement to me yet again.

    I love you dearly!

  3. Lisa told me about your blog yesterday! I'm so excited to see it, and I love the hats. Thanks for coming out yesterday. I thought it was a successful shower despite the snow interfering. Love you much.
